Burundi: Five Human Rights Defenders arrested

Four human rights defenders were arrested yesterday morning, February 14, 2023, at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport on their way to Kampala, Uganda, for a meeting, and another was arrested in Ngozi the same day.

According to Itara Burundi Newspaper’s sources, these names were been expected since the day before; all planes were searched for the human rights defenders who were supposed to go to Uganda for a meeting.

Three women Sylvana Inamahoro, Executive Director of the Association for Peace and the Promotion of Human Rights (APDH), Sonia Ndikumasabo, President of the Association of Women Lawyers of Burundi (AFJB) and Marie Emerusabe, General Coordinator of the same association,

A man Audace Havyarimana, Legal representative of the Association for Peace and the Promotion of Human Rights (APDH) were arrested yesterday morning at 8:00 a.m. by the head of the national intelligence service in Bujumbura City, Burundian economic capital city and a fifth was arrested in Ngozi on a warrant.

The charges are still unknown at the time of writing.

It should be remembered that the President of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, is the current president of the East African Community countries, including Uganda, where his victims were travelling.
