In a letter that the Burundian revenue office, OBR, sent to the Office du Transport en Commun, OTRACO, on December 14, 2022, it asked for its collaboration in collecting road fees.
The OBR is asking OTRACO to demand proof of payment of road fees from applicants for technical control services in order to force car owners to pay.
Concordant sources affirm that the road fee section has not collected the revenue expected in this current budgetary year while vehicles are entering in large quantities in Burundi.
According to tax law specialists contacted by the Itara Burundi newspaper, road tax is an almost new item in the Burundian tax system, and taxpayers pay taxes, contributions, insurance, and technical control…. The taxpayer has not been sufficiently sensitized to the merits of this road tax, which is due annually in a significant amount.
Keep informed that the payment is made as follows:
A motorcycle is required to pay BIF10,000.00.
A tricycle/quadricycle BiF20,000.00
Public transport BiF100,000.00
While individual motor vehicles must pay according to the engine capacity and in the following way:
Less than or equal to 2000cc must pay BiF50,000.00
Between 2001 cc to 3500cc must pay BiF100,000.00
Between 3501 cc to 4500cc must pay BiF500,000.00
Above 4500 cc must pay BiF1000,000.00
Latecomers will be fined 50% of the amount owed, which means that someone who was supposed to pay BiF500,000.00 will pay BiF750,000, and someone who was supposed to pay BiF1000,000 will pay BiF1,500,000.00
