Burundi: Trial of Dr Christophe Sahabo

On June 15, 2023, the trial of Dr. Christophe Sahabo opened in a public hearing before the Muha High Court in Bujumbura, accompanied by his lawyer and in the presence of the civil party.

During this second public hearing, according to Itara Burundi newspaper sources, Dr. Christophe Sahabo was assisted by his lawyer and pleaded his case on the merits, proving his innocence and demonstrating the illegal nature of his case since his arrest.

Under the supervision of the Tribunal, debates were held between all the parties to the trial, and the case was taken under advisement by the Tribunal for a decision:

1. On the release of Dr. Christophe Sahabo in view of the irregularities in criminal procedure that have marred his case.

2. On the competence of the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Muha to rule on the disputes between the shareholders of Kira Hospital.

3. Whether the civil party (Socabu and the interim management of Kira Hospital) is legally entitled to claim damages on behalf of the Kira Hospital trading company without the approval of the General Meeting of Shareholders.

It should be noted that the first public hearing took place on May 05, 2023, but on that day there were no substantive debates, as the civil party had not yet legally formalized the deposit of legal costs, according to our sources.

Judgment will be handed down within a period not exceeding 30 days, as required by the law of criminal procedure.
